The World Cup and the world’s protest in Brazil

“Everything in Brazil is a mess. There is no education, health care — no security. The government doesn’t care. We’re a rich country with a lot of potential but the money doesn’t go to those who need it most.” - 26 year old Brazilian photographer Manoela Chiabai, speaking to the AP.

The pre-match pleasantries exchanged before each Confederations Cup match belie a dark reality: the people of Brazil are boiling over, and soccer fans and social media mavens worldwide are facilitating their distress.

Over $13 billion has been spent by the Brazilian government on stadium infrastructure and investments related to the World Cup; $13 billion in a country where the income of the average Brazilian hovers around $400 per month. Add in the destruction of historic favelas to make way for a safer Brazil, a dubious stadium bid process and misused government grants, and you have a World Cup more accurately defined by corruption, gentrification and a suppression of the real issues plaguing Brazil, than any sort of sporting spirit.

Brazilian scholar Fabio Malini told the New York Times that “The largest protests are happening in cities which will host World Cup games. Brazilians are mixing soccer and politics in a way that is new, and minority voices are making themselves heard.”

Of course, this isn’t to say that the nearing World Cup is at the root of the ongoing social and political concerns which have led to friction amongst the Brazilian population. Inflation and unemployment are high, the disparity between social classes is expanding, and the poor are bearing the brunt of a new-found focus on globalization and international image; the World Cup is just a spark to long-brewing frustrations. People are suffering, and nothing could seem further from resolving their ills than oppressive concrete stadiums and soon-to-be abandoned hotels.

San Antonio Says ‘In Your Face, Racists!’

Respect to the San Antonio Spurs for facing the racist attacks and having Sebastien de la Cruz back to sing the US national anthem before tonight’s game 4 of the NBA finals. Credit to Mayor Julián Castro and his wife, Erica, for showing their support by being there to introduce him.

Let us all take this as a lesson: Confront the negativity. Bullies don’t pick on the those who stand up for themselves.

For years, we’ve allowed racist think tanks, politicians, and the mainstream media to use Mexicans as a scapegoat. This is why so many felt comfortable attacking little Sebastien for representing his heritage on Tuesday. Such hatred had become normalized.

There were some who felt Sebastien shouldn’t have worn his traje de charro. He provoked the racist attacks, they said. That’s absurd.

In the words of Gloria Anzaldúa: “This land was Mexican once, was Indian always and is. And will be again.” Mexicans cannot be considered foreigners on the land that was once ours, and certainly not “illegal,” as some have suggested.

Never let the hatred and ignorance of others define you. Do as little Sebastien has done and allow the beauty of our culture to speak for itself.

And speaking of beauty, as we’ve said before, Mexican is a beautiful word, use it! Stop using Hispanic and Latino for that which is uniquely Mexican. Like mariachi, for instance. This turns Mexican into a dirty word, which if you noticed, is how many were using it on Tuesday.

The Spurs, Julián Castro and little Sebastien may’ve just done more for Mexicans in the US than anything or anyone else has in recent memory. And they did so by simply being themselves: Mexican. ¡Eso es todo!

“Thousands of protesters are taking to the streets in Brazil’s two biggest cities, protesting against 10-cent hikes in bus and subway fares. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets Thursday night to disperse thousands of protesters in Sao Paulo who had been chanting, “The love is over — Turkey is right here” before fleeing the law enforcement onslaught. At least 55 people were injured and 60 arrested during the fourth demonstration in a week.

The crowd that formed earlier Thursday outside the Municipal Theater in Sao Paulo drew together a combination of students, citizens protesting police violence, representatives from various left-leaning parties and supporters of the original protest, which called for better and more equitable access to public transportation.

Sao Paulo is plagued by grindingly slow traffic and poor public transportation, so its low-income residents often face long, dreary commutes. Bus fare was recently raised from about $1.40 to about $1.50. Minimum wage is just over $350 a month.

At first, the crowd moved peacefully through the streets, with some waving Turkish flags in recognition of the protests there. A small minority wore masks. Workers and residents cheered from windows; others complained of traffic jams caused by the protest. When the group neared Roosevelt Square, police began to fire tear gas.”
